Climate Resilience Portfolio

INTRODUCTION

Reach India Trust is deeply committed to advancing climate resilience by empowering vulnerable communities through integrated, climate-responsive development programmes. Over the past 17 years, the organisation has consistently worked in high-risk, underserved regions where the impacts of climate change—such as recurrent floods, rising temperatures, declining air quality, and environmental degradation—directly affect the health, sanitation, and livelihoods of households.

Driven by the vision of creating sustainable and climate-adaptive communities, Reach India Trust designs and implements large-scale interventions that enable households to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to climate-related risks. The organisation’s climate-resilience framework focuses on three interconnected pillars: infrastructure strengthening, behaviour change, and community capacity building. These efforts ensure that climate action is not limited to technological solutions alone, but is supported by strong community ownership and systemic change.

A major component of this work involves supporting households in adopting climate-adaptive sanitation and hygiene practices. In flood-prone districts of Bihar, where a large number of toilets become defunct due to structural issues, monsoon flooding, and lack of maintenance, Reach India Trust promotes retrofitting solutions, safely managed sanitation systems (SMSS), and hand hygiene for all (HH4A). These interventions help communities transition from unsafe practices to durable, resilient sanitation options that can withstand climatic stress. Additionally, the organisation leads widespread behaviour change communication (BCC) campaigns, ensuring that households not only have access to improved infrastructures but also adopt safe, consistent hygiene behaviours.

Beyond WASH, Reach India Trust has expanded its climate portfolio to address broader environmental concerns such as air quality deterioration, solid waste mismanagement, and householdlevel risk mitigation. Community awareness programmes are conducted on the impacts of poor air quality, preventive measures, and the importance of clean household energy. These efforts are complemented by training sessions, local action plans, and school- and community-level demonstrations that promote climate literacy and informed decision-making.

Retrofitting – 2023

Supported by UNICEF

Location : Bihar

Overview

The Retrofitting Initiative of Reach India Trust, implemented as part of its climate-resilient WASH programming, focuses on restoring and upgrading defunct sanitation systems in flood-prone and high-risk regions of Bihar. The initiative aims to ensure that households have access to durable, safe, and climateadaptive sanitation facilities that remain functional despite recurrent monsoon flooding and environmental stress. By strengthening infrastructure, building community awareness, and enhancing technical capacity at the local level, the retrofitting programme plays a crucial role in promoting safely managed sanitation systems (SMSS) and improving overall public health outcomes.

Objectives

  • Restore and rehabilitate defunct or damaged toilets to ensure safe, regular, and climate-resilient usage.
  • Upgrade existing sanitation systems through structural modifications such as pit conversions, pan and trap replacements, and drainage improvements.
  • Build the capacity of masons, sanitation workers, and community volunteers to implement climateadaptive retrofitting practices.
  • Promote sustained hygiene behaviours through behaviour-change communication (BCC) and household awareness.
  • Support vulnerable households living in flood-affected and waterlogged areas with long-term sanitation resilience solutions.

KEY COVERAGE AREAS

  • Retrofitting of damaged and defunct household toilets
  • Capacity building of sanitation workers and masons
  • Household-level hygiene behaviour improvement
  • Climate-resilient sanitation system strengthening
  • Community awareness on safe toilet usage and maintenance
  • Support for flood-affected low-income households

Air Quality: Strategic Approach Strengthening Collaboration

Supported by ASAR

Loaction : West bengal, Jharkhand

Since – 2024-25

Overview

The Air Quality Initiative of Reach India Trust, implemented under the ASAR (Action for Sustainable Air Response) programme, focuses on strengthening community-led actions to reduce air pollution in urban and peri-urban locations. The initiative builds awareness, enhances local capacities, and supports evidence-based strategies to improve environmental health across West Bengal and Jharkhand. By engaging grassroots organizations, community groups, and local institutions, the programme promotes collaborative efforts for cleaner, healthier living environments.

Objectives

  • Build the capacity of communities and local partners to understand, assess, and act on air-quality challenges.
  • Promote strategic collaboration among grassroots organizations to strengthen local clean-air action.
  • Develop and disseminate IEC materials that simplify air-pollution awareness and promote behavior change.
  • Support local teams in designing, implementing, and monitoring community-based clean-air interventions.

IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK

The ASAR programme provides:

  • Two comprehensive training modules
  • Strategic Approach & Strengthening Collaboration
  • Capacity-building workshops for grassroots partners and frontline workers.
  • Issue-based networking and collaboration support with local organizations.
  • Behavior-change communication support through posters, IEC materials, and community engagement activities.
  • Handholding support for planning and implementing clean-air initiatives.
  • Awareness sessions conducted across multiple locations in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

KEY COVERAGE AREAS

  • Capacity building of grassroots groups
  • Collaboration strengthening
  • Clean-air community awareness
